En 1969 se disolvió "The Jimi Hendrix Experience" y montó un nuevo grupo llamado "Band Of Gypsys" con Buddy Miles en la batería y Billy Cox en el bajo eléctrico, con los cuales se presento en el memorable Live at the Fillmore East

Protagonizó el histórico concierto del Festival de la Isla de Wight en 1970, con una merma en sus fuerzas por la gira "Cry of Love", debido a un "estresante ritmo de trabajo" mezcla de la vorágine creativa y la compleja transición hacia un bluesrock más sofisticado.
Tambien destacan los recitales de Atlanta y Berkeley.

En 1970 durante la grabacion de su cuarto álbum, "First Rays of The New Rising Sun" en Londres, planificado como álbum doble (por la gran cantidad de canciones, tomas y demos)., en la madrugada del 18 de septiembre de 1970, Jimi Hendrix ingirió una mezcla de somníferos y alcohol y murió al parecer por aspiración de vómito. Años después, luego de investigaciones, se supo que, en realidad, el músico no había muerto en el momento y con su propio jugo gástrico, si no que en realidad, cuando lo llevaban en la camilla, James Marshall quería voltear la cabeza para poder devolver en el suelo y el camillero colocó su cabeza fuera de la camilla causando así su atragantamiento y fallecimiento. Existen diferentes versiones sobre su muerte, aunque no están probadas oficialmente.



En 1994 se edita "BLUES" , un album postumo con 11 canciones algunas de ellas covers:
